Over the last week, we've gone on a local trail and either walked or had the 3 older kids riding their bikes on it. We go a couple of miles (which is good exercise for the kids). Along the way we're looking at the various grasses and crops growing along the trail and take notice of the plentiful amount of insects to be seen. Mainly there's tons of grasshoppers that jump and sometimes fly out of our way as we go down the trail. A few times, Tom has caught a grasshopper and showed it to the kids. Tom has also caught a toad for them to look at. We've picked sand plums & wild blueberries - which were fun to sample. The seeds had to be spit out, but they all wanted to eat some. Ezra is really good with chewy it awhile & then successfully spitting out the skin & seed. The girls especially like to search for acorns to take home with them. Ezra & Elise like the various wild flowers & grass that grow.
This hike Tom showed them a huge metal dry drainage tunnel that went under the trail. The kids could walk through it without bending over & I'm sure they liked that their voices echoed while in the tunnel. This afternoon, we forgot to bring the backpack carrier for Elise. So she trotted along while holding Tom's hand and kept up pretty good. On the way back she got a ride on top of Tom's shoulders.
